I alwyas render everything to TGA. If I need to downsize, I do tat in my Paint program.
I started off rendering to JPG, but it anti-aliases *everything*. Meaning, there was no such thing, as far as I could tell, as getting a sharp edge anywhere and the images always looked all muddied-up and smudgy. After I learned more about how JPG works, I immediately switched to TGA.
I think tS also renders to PNG; I know there is a setting to choose between rendering to a 24-bit or 32-bit image, with the latter (as far as I understand) allowing for the existence of an alpha channel.
TGA files are larger in terms of KB, but might as well save the best-quality originals as possible. You can always transfer those to CD to keep, and then use a paint program to modify/ersize/etc. the images as needed. Having a finely-detailed original is also noce (as it is with photos) just in case you really like something a lot and decide to have it done up in poster size.
