Avi Projection images

Thanks Jonathon and Anthony!

Thanks for the cool examples Anthony, and for proving that I'm not crazy
(well, at least in regards to this).  When I started the project, I assumed
that I could use the projector light but started to doubt myself after it
wouldn't work.

My .avi files are from my Pentax digital camera (nice and grainy), so I'll
have to try out some other .avi files to narrow down the problem.  As you
suggest, maybe it's the CODEC, so I'll try to run the .avi through Bink &
Smacker (to convert it to another CODEC type) to see if it fixes the
problem.

Oh, tS doesn't give me any kind of error when I try to use the files, it's
just that when I go to load the texture, the texture thumbnail viewer
(within tS) shows a white box with "Unsupported File Type" in place of the
thumbnail.

I'll investigate more later on today and post an update.  Thanks for all of
your help.

Heath

Heath,

No, you're not crazy, tS does allow you to use AVI files both as animated
textures and with projector lights.

For textures you can use the 'texture map' colour shader. Load your AVI in
and check the 'anim' checkbox. In solid display modes, you should see the
texture animating in the workspace once it has been applied to an object.

For projector lights, simply load the AVI file in as th projector image.
There are no settings to make it animate, it will do so automatically if it
is an AVI file.

The downside of projector lights is that they are always square, but you can
reformat the AVI image being projected to compensate and make the projector
light shine through a cutout to get different shapes.

I think you can only use AVI files, not MPG, MOV or other types as I only
see AVI files in the image selector dialogues. If I force an MPG or MOV file
to load I get no error but a projector light casts no projection. If tS is
complaining about the file (I don't understand what you mean by "shows it as
an unsupported file type") and it is an AVI, then I would check the CODEC
being used and the resolution of the AVI file to see if they are causing a
problem.
