The 10 based system is because we count all fingers. The dozen system starts with oneself (one) then goes on with the thumb (two - note the sound similarity) then the rest of the fingers on one hand. On seven you are back on yourself then the next hand - sums up to 12.
For dividing reasons a 16 or 8 based system is better - and also used in computer technology.
But ordinary mathematics use the 10 based system, so why not stick to that??
