Back Games only use Tri's.and real low polycounts. But Chromes not for games, he's poly counts about 10^100 to high and he will be SDS.
If ya have one Tri in the middle of a bunch of quads see the blue quads with a dot in the center with 3 lines attached to it above the lips.

ya half to add lines to make the tri a quad.so in this setting it razes the poly count."Faces" but if ya just take a quad mesh and Tri the hole mesh so it's 100% tris then it razes the ploy count."Faces " but not the "Vertices" count cause it's counting each single quad as 2 Tris. but in reality a quad mesh of 10 and a tri mesh of 20 would be the same right ? tris make most of the dots have 5,6 lines attached to each dot. does not raze the vertices count but adds lines to for each dot. thou ya seldom hear bout how many lines our attached to a dot it's jus as important as quads, tris.
This is for sub divided models not game models. C4D Manuel even tells you to model with quads, the Characters that comes with C4D our 100% Quads. Lightwavers prefer Quads even thou Sub Patch divides Tri's. I don't have Maya,XSI yet, I asked Maya,XSI camps they said Quads. they all attempt to use Quads as much as possible and have the philosophy Quads our better then Tri's.for sub divided meshes. I think it's not so much tri or quad as it's the dots with a lot of 5,6 lines attached to it that causes unwanted effects. Most of Chromes dots have 4 lines attached to them.
