Curve snapping? 2003-12-02 - By Frank McIntyre
Back Snap to Curve behavior is definitely odd. Here's what works for me most of the time: First, using the LMB and the Move tool, drag the point/object so that the little yellow circle at the center of the move gnomon overlaps the curve you want to snap to. Release the mouse button. Now LMB click again, making sure that the point of you cursor is inside the little yellow circle and the snap should to take hold when you try to drag.
It seems like Maya wants the curve and the tip of your cursor to lay within the radius of that little circle on the Move tool at the beginning of a click and drag. If you are in the habit of using the MMB so your cursor does not have to be directly on the object being dragged (like I am), it is likely that the tip of the cursor will not be inside the yellow circle at the crucial moment.
However, after saying all that, it still doesn't always work the first time.
I really wish the workflow for this tool would get re-examined by the fine folks at Alias, or at least that they would give a very detailed, clear description of exactly how the tool is supposed to behave in the docs.
