Importing Curves and TSML vrs Forums 2004-06-19 - By Ed Baker
Back Well here's my 2 cents for the TSML.
I do research on the Forums, but prefer the TSML over forums or MRIC.
So, I get disappointed when it gets slow.
Enough on that.
I don't think this ever got answered, but from a thread that was going on a few days ago. About trying to import curves into TS as curves and not shapes.
If you export from Illustrator to a .DXF, it will import into TS as a curve and not a shape the way an .ai will. I'm not sure if Illustrator 9 will do this, but Illustrator 10 will. Version 8.0 can't export .dxf.
For an example see here: http://www.rift3d.com/importing_curves.jpg
Extruded for detail, on the left is the polygonal model from the .ai shape, and on the right is the NURBS curve extruded from the imported .dxf curve.
You can download the two files if you want to see it for yourself: http://www.rift3d.com/curves.zip
A couple of tips on importing curves and shapes for the uninformed: When exporting to an Illustrator .ai file make sure that your shape has no stroke. TS will see the space between the stroke and the fill as the face of the shape. Also make sure to save no higher than Illustrator version 8.0. TS doesn't support it.
Okay, this is where it gets a little weirder. When you export to .dxf from Illustrator, make sure to have BOTH stroke AND fill, or else when you try to import it into TS you will get a "Bad Data" error. Maybe someone with a little more familiarity with autoCAD files can fill you in on why this is. Otherwise you get a perfect curve ready for NURBS manipulation or conversion to a path.
Now how this relates to Corel Draw, I'm not sure. I've never used it, and aren't too sure of the limits to its compatibility with Illustrator. If anything, find someone with Illustrator 10 to convert it for you. Which I would be happy to do.
Hope This Helps! Ed Baker
Long Live the TSML! :)
