Shading Domains on imported OBJ very slow... 2004-08-13 - By hdaggers2000
Back Hullo.
I've imported an architectural mesh into C3. It is a single OBJ which seems to have already had some shading domains defined since a single texture appears differently on different areas of ther model (an archway shows the texture rotated 90 degrees, while the wall shows the "normal" parametric shader, while stairs show the shader enlarged 200%, etc). Within C3, however, no shader domains have been defined, so I've converted the OBJ to the Vertex Modeller and am trying to select groups of facets so I can name them and apply different shaders to the various parts of the model. I think this is what I am supposed to do....
What happens tho, is each facet takes about 30 seconds to select(!) and selecting groups of facets is impossible. I've never tried to define shader domains on a Carrara-native model, but this seems rediculous. I'm on a dual- processor 1Gig G4 (osX.3.5) and at this rate it would take days to select just a single area so I can name it! Am I doing something encredibly wrong? Is this the normal behavior for Carrara? By closing all but one view and using the "flat" renderer, the selection response time is more like 5-10 seconds, but still!
My hope is that there is a tutorial for importing and re-defining domains on a model (it seems pretty straight-forward in the manual, is it possible I'm doing it wrong?) Or perhaps someone could just confirm that "Yep, it's damn slow". The facets don't seem to be unnecessarily large or complex.... Anyone have experience with this "issue" -- if it even is an issue? Would a 3rd-party program allow me to do this easier, better, faster?
Thanks again, holly
