I would beg to differ on XSI's renderer. Carrara's has the usability
aspect hands down, but XSI's renderer has many features that Carrara is
lacking. For one, you get a full blown version of Mental Ray 3.3 with
XSI (Foundation version is not standalone). This renderer compares with
Renderman from Pixar. One really cool feature is that it can utilize
your Video card with OpenGl to assist with the rendering to make it
faster. The only thing that Carrara has feature wise that XSI doesn't is
a Sky Editor. The main thing that Carrara has going for it is that it is
MUCH easier to use, and has lower system requirements.

I was thinking the same thing, Tony.  I rarely do any modeling in
Carrara.  I use Wings3D.  But for animation and rendering Carrara is
hard to beat even in bigger named packages.  For example, C4D's
basic package (still more expensive than Carrara) doesn't have
caustics, HDRI, etc...  Same for XSI's new $495 package, it's
renderer can't match up to Carrara's!

Why use a slow, buggy opensource experiment when you can use a fast,
feature-filled renderer like Carrara's?

Stick with what ya got!
