Re: Metaball question for Carrara 4

Actually, Majorie used it for the pin cushion for her illustration a
couple of issues ago in the 3DXtract e-mag.   She used it for the pin
cushion.

It should be in Carrara, but (like vertex modeler) it needs quite a
bit of work to make it really effective and efficent to use.  It's
interface is extremely dated, similar to that Amapi 5 program that
comes with C (reminds me of dos programs).  I'm not saying that you
cann't do real work in it, but it takes alot more work to use it and
to use it well, than by using different modelling means (or programs
to model with).

An example could be a teddy bear.  If you wanted to model a quick
bear, you'll toss in a few positive sphere for the general shape, and
then maybe a couple negative spheres to make the dimbles for the eye
pins.  A quick and effective technique.  To do this in the VM, you'll
need to perform a much more tedious level of control of adding
"thickness" to objects and extruding things out until you get the
shape.  Ultimately, most models I think would be built in the MM would
be converted into the VM for the texturing (UV mapping, that is)
abilities in that modeler.

Having the option to model this way is great.  Actually using it is
something different.  I would not even think about the MM to model a
desk or even a complex organic shape like a person.  But if a rock or
eroded object is needed than that might become a viable alternative to
use it for.  Also, due to the "randomness" of the placement of points
and such, I wouldn't use this means if I needed an extreme close-up of
my models.

If you have the free time, then practice with the different modelers
with the exact same design.  Learn to see which one can build what
types of things faster than the others could.
