Back For what it's worth, here is what I use and it's QUITE Zippy!
Dell Dimensions XPS Windows XP Pro (Which networks fine with Windows 98!) 3.2 GHz P4 (Supports multi-threading in Carrara!) 800 Mhz Bus 2GB RAM 128 MB ATI Radeon (Hey, I still play games now and then!) 120 GB HD Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (totaly useless for 3D animation ;) but sounds like an angel! ) Firewire (2 ports!) & USB 2.0 (6 ports!) And every other bell and whistle I could pack in the box.
However, I've heard that you are much better off if you can afford to buy a dual Xeon processor machine. Imagine watching FOUR boxes render at once instead of two! Ohhhhh! I get shivers!
Of course, mine is NOT a budget machine. But I highly recommend buying as much RAM and processor as you can afford. Those will have the most impact on your rendering and modeling speed.
And DON'T use Windows 98! Unstable and lousy memory management. You need a more stable and powerful OS like 2000, XP Pro, or 2003 Server. XP Pro is sufficient for modeling.
