Back Although it's a little on the dated side, I own the below mentioned book. It contains solid details about using layers and filters to generate the 2D bitmap textures that we love to use on our 3D models. It covers both seamless tiling techniques and charater/object textures for mapping. However, you are left to your own devices when it's time to UV unwrap your models. The book assumes that you can do this (but, it does cover briefly the concepts of it). Luckily for us C3 has a built in UV Unwrapper for the vertex models, so that simplifies things for us. (Assuming that we don't use a 3rd party program for that.)
