Hi Joey,
I don't know quite what you are looking for or what you don't like
about Photoshop 8.5, but if you are looking for a "paint" program,
have you tried the freeware app. called ARTRAGE? It is more a basic
traditional "painting-on-canvas" program with oil, pastel, acrylic,
etc. tools. You can even see the paint "build" and form on the canvas
with your strokes.
It's at least worth a glance, since it is free.
