I did not know either, but got curious, so I experimented a little and
found:

It is a curve that you can use, not a path.
First create a curve, or get one from the library, so that it exists as a
curve object in your scene. Then select the object that should be arrayed
and click on the array icon. This is where you can either create a new
array curve or just point and click on the predifined curve present in the
scene.

The origin for the array will be the location af the arraye object, not
the curve, but the orientation of the curve is preserved.
The array curve is editable without affecting the original curve.

An array curve can be copied and saved just like any othe curve.
