There are a lot of ways to skin this cat.

Personally, I try to avoid the UV editor not because
it isn't powerful. Just because it takes TIME to use it.
When I want to accomplish something like your
wing, I create the wing in a vector drawing program
and then import that shape into Photoshop to create
the map. Then I import the shape into the Spline Modeler
in Carrara and, if need be, convert it to the Vertex
Modeler.

It's a breeze to do it this way as long as you follow
some simple rules:

1. When you create the map, make sure you don't
leave any trim around the originally imported shape.
Make your map go right to the edge. Carrara maps
the image edge to edge.

2. When you create the map, if you have areas that
go beyond the edge of the shape, color them the
same as the interior area so, if Carrara doesn't map
it exactly, it won't show.

3. When you originally create the shape in your vector
program, orient it so it efficiently fits a rectangle. Since
Carrara only deals with rectangular maps, then you
won't have any problems.

4. Once you have created the shape within the rectangular
format, don't change the orientation. You want it to be
the same in the vector program, the paint program and
Carrara.

5. Flat map the texture inthe texture room and all will
be well.

That's a beautiful wing, Claudia. Hope the rest of the
project goes smoothly.
