Did you try the Bend/Twist modifier? Each one will let you twist 180
degrees, but you can keep adding them. You can also add a Taper
modifier.

You could also try the virtex modeller- if you extrude, rotate,
shrink, repeat, then use the subdivision smoothing, I'll bet you
could get something looking pretty good. A more labor intensive
answer. . .
