Might be able to help.

Click on the plane to select it.  Go to the texturing room.  Under the
color selection, select "texture map", open the file, and then adjust
(with the little bent arrow) the orientation.  Play with the settings,
you'll see how this works.

Texturing is moderately easy, depending on what you do.  Basic thing
is to start out simple and go from there, getting an idea of what each
channel does.
