Actually nospam - you are right, it is not requireed to have a stem.
However, the orientation and shape of the leaf object will allow
Carrara to compute where the leaf attaches to the branch. Creating a
stem will allow for more predictable results with custom leaves. I'm
posting a sample pic of some custom leaves called "trees & plants
tests"
