Hi Everyone,

****this email does not deal with carrara issues. So disregard if you
want. However, you might find it interesting.*****

I have a very strange request of all you folks. I don't mean to
significantly deviate from the normal carrara conversations on this
mailing list, but I figure this issue could effect all of us now and in
the future. And sense we're all friends, what the heck....

Anyway, here goes...

I live in Utah. 18 cities here have put together a group called UTOPIA.
UTOPIA is basically a fiber to the home project. It would provide 100+
Mbps data speeds to every home and business in each of these cities.
These fiber lines would provide people with all the telecommunications
services they could ever need (phone, internet, HDTV, video
conferencing, etc).

The cities simply provide the "roads" or the fiber infrastructure, and
then allow any private company to use the lines. The cities themselves
would not provide content, or would not be a provider of say internet
or cable. They would only provide the fiber. Legally they can not
compete with private industry, so, as governments do with airports,
they will only provide the runways (fiber lines) and any airline
(service provider) can fly and land and use it.

This would allow for massive competition, and lower prices, for much,
much higher data speeds.

Anyway, that's the idea. If this can take hold here, then it will
potentially spread to other cities.

7 of these city councils have already voted and all are in favor. Qwest
is pushing a bill (Senate bill 66) through the state legislature that
will kill UTOPIA. It's already passed the Senate and is on the verge of
passing through the House and therefore killing UTOPIA. I'd rather not
be stuck with Qwest's monopoly and suffer their continual rate
increases.

What I'd like you folks to do is quickly take a pole on this web site:
http://www.rogerbarrus.com/mail.html

It is for one of our Representatives who's taking a private pole. With
your help, he may decide to vote for UTOPIA and kill SB66.

You can ignore the other questions (there are 4 total) if you want. But
number 3 is the question on UTOPIA. Make sure you vote "yes" on this
question.

If you have any other questions about UTOPIA, you can go to this site:
http://www.telecompete.org/

Thanks for all your help folks!!!!

I'm sorry if I offended any of you by introducing this subject.

Eric Christensen
