I've used following solution to this problem
1. Create your text without kerning.
2. ctrl-c, ctrl-v to copy it, name copy text2
3. edit your second text objects kerning and word spacing. Don't
touch the thickness, bevel etc settings to keep the geomtery
creation similar per letter
4. convert both objects to vertex models
5. turn off 'Visible' from properties of 'text2'
6. Apply morhper modifier to text1, set target to text2.
7. move the slider.
