I've used Animation Master, Truespace and Carrara.  I won third place in one of
the Animation Master Contests, but I have basically stopped using it about a
year ago because it only does nurbs.  I work as an Engineer so I want to render
my models which export from Inventor and AutoCAD as 3d faces.  They can't be
imported into Animation Master with any effectiveness (unless the software has
changed).
I own TS 6.6.  I bought it because Carrara was in flux and I didn't think there
was going to be a Version 2 and have kept up the updates because they are so
cheap.  True space is icon based and is incredibly difficult to keep track of
all the icons.  Maybe I'm just getting too old, you know, the memory is the
second thing to go (forgot what the first was).  They added an icon manager,
but I've lost interest.
I talked my employers into buying Carrara and I've rendered equipment that I
have designed and saved them thousands on photography.  It's translated into
some pretty good raises as well as company awards.  I have also made animations
and logos and stuff as a freelancer.  Having a full time job and doing this as
a hobby, I only take freelance work if I feel it's very interesting.  I wouldn
't know how to turn this into a living full time (maybe if they had this
software twenty years ago it would be a different story), but from the
unsolicited requests that I get from contacts I've developed as an engineer, I
would think it's possible to do this full time.  The freelance has paid for my
computers and all my software so it has been worth it to me.
How to get started in this as a career, I have no idea but I just wanted to
point out the positives.
