Claudia,

I just tried out some things so I would be
able to explain it better and I think you will
have the greatest luck with align/space
instead of distribute. Distribute works better
with multiple objects which are the same
size and shape. I use it often for placing a
series of lights on a ceiling, for example.

It's pretty simple once you understand the
concept Carrara uses, but I'm not sure it
will help you much if you are using lots
of words. I only use this for a few letters
at a time.

1. Drop a type object into your scene.
That will take you into the type editor.
2. Type the first letter in your word in
the editor and set its size, bevel, etc.
as you want it. Return to the Assemble
Room.
3. Duplicate that type object, with it still
selected, go into the modeler again and
"create a new master" as you do. Replace
the first letter with the second one. Keep
going back to the Assemble Room, duplicate
the type object and return to the modeler
until you have each letter in the word as
a separate type object.
4. Now select all of the letters in the word
and go to the top menu and select "align."
The align dialogue comes up. Set it to
space/sides/enter a distance and check the
X axis and uncheck the Y axis in the diagram.
Click Okay.
5. Using the space/sides feature will give you
any specific distance between the letters that
you want. The only trouble is that there are
some letters like "W" which might give you
trouble when placed next to certain other letters.
In those cases, you will have to kern by hand.
