Yes, I understand your dilemma because not all graphics programs
output AI or EPS files as "true" vectors that Carrara can read. I have
found this to be the case with Paint Shop Pro, a program that I use.

I also understand your need to put text in a circle because I am
currently working on a medallion type logo which uses this approach to
text.  The way I get around the whole Spline modeling problem is that
I create my text in AMAPI along with the curve/shape that will match
the shape of my object's path.  Then I simply use the bend tool and my
text is aligned perfectly along the circle path I need.  The steps are
as follows:

1) In AMAPI, I create my text using the text tool.

2) I then draw a circle with the ploygon draw tool making sure that
resolution (or number of points) is over 60.  At this stage, however,
I make sure that my circle is fairly close to the one I am using in my
model.  If you model in AMAPI, then you should be able to use the
curve extraction tool on your model to get the exact size of your circle.

3)  I then select my text, select the BEND tool, and then select the
circle.

4) You should see the text take the form of the circled path (this
also works with half cirlces and other shapes).

You are now ready to export it to Carrara to continue.

If I need to adjust the letter spacing when I create my text, I either
use the space bar or simply add "space holder" characters which I turn
invisible after I import it into Carrara.  This method hasn't failed
me yet and works fairly quickly when you need to do tweaking.

I know that this approach works well with AMAPI  ver. 6, however, I
just did it with ver. 5.15 and it seems to work fine as well.  If you
use AMAPI for only this feature, I would say it is worth it.

The only caveats I have is that when you make your polygon circle
path, make sure that the resolution count is high (over 60) to ensure
that the bend will work properly.  Also, you may have to re-orient
your model after bending (usually a 180 degree rotation along an axis)
but this is minor.  Also, sometimes there is a glitch and the the text
takes to the path in a "weird" way.  Just redo the circle and increase
the resolution.  That should take care of it.

Well, hope this helps.

Cheers,

Claudia
