Back One of the quickest ways to inflate file size is to check the option to save textures internally -- it appears in the dialog you get whenever you save the file. Any bitmaps that you're using to texture the object become part of the file. That's great if you want to render the file on several different machines & don't want to hassle with setting up folders or re-texturing the object each time. But the file size can instantly become huge. I almost always leave the textures external to the .car file.
