Back In Raydream I used the direction buffers (Forget the actual term). You can select surfaces based on the direction they face. It's a quick way to lighten foreground, darken background, or the other way around. Carrara's lighting capabilities are so much more sophisticated, I haven't bothered with them in a long time, but they are useful.
I never have gotten any sense of what the other buffers do. I've rendered them, looked at them, played with them, but I don't get it.
