Back I thought I posted this before... but oh well..
Anyway, I'd absolutely use physics. I just tried a quickie and it works pretty well.
Basically to get the "spin off the hand" you just need to turn on physics, then set initial vector velocity (e.g. 34 for x) and rotational velocity.
You may find that the die falls through whatever surface you have (I did) so I duplicated the surface, offset its z position a tiny bit and rotated it around the z axis by 1 degree.
Also, turning up the physics quality helps.
That said, if you have a slow computer, you can use rough physics, then turn physics off, enable Save Tweener Data and under Motion of the die, set to Motion Path which will give you a path.
