Re: Punk Rock Girl, carrara character posing 2004-02-10 - By bijou
Back Hi Dee,
yeah, I was wondering how he did it, it looked like poser though, the movements weren't very fluid to me, and it looked like Poser's usual cruddy rendering in several instances. Carrara is actually better for posing than Poser is... I just wish the facial animation could be better... but I'm trying to see how far I can get.
here's the beginning of my rig though for Carrara. This model is only a standin for character boning... the model is Daz Victoria 1. She is a lot smoother posing in Carrara than she is in Poser in extreme poses in the hip... very little crumpling of the hip and knee joints comparatively to Poser. And the nice thing is that she's a LOT less polygons than V3. I have Vicky low res too, this is going to be great with her as well... for those background characters that you don't need too much emphasis on, and can't be bothered to pose in Poser (not to mention the low res chars deform pretty bad in Poser anyway).

havent finished the head/arms/shoulders yet, and yes, she's missing her eyes on purpose because I want a nicer pair added separately at the end, but I have hit upon a great thigh joint setup now, that gets a wide range of movement without a lot of going into the vertex modeller to edit weights. I will still refine this further by adding a material to the pelvic region so that I can easily remove the bones affecting it, making it easier to end distortion.
Some things I realised... I don't have to weld the shader domains from the head and body, messes up the uvmapping. Unfortunately this causes a very slight "crease" line at the neck when you render, but its not too noticable.
other unnecessary materials can be combined in Grouper before importing the figure to reduce those creases. Another thing, the feet and legs should be modelled apart (at shoulder width) for boning a good hip joint... its hard to rig a figure with the legs pointing straight down in C for some reason, or maybe I'm just not getting something, but its the only way I've been able to mostly eliminate the hip distortion when bending. So I posed the figure with her legs spread to shoulder width in Poser and then brought in to Carrara.
take care, Robin
