The problem is that Viewpoint is obviously, and by far, the best
solution available today (from the beginning, Viewpoint has been in a position
to become
the 3D de facto standard as Flash is currently the 2D de fact
standard, but a crazy marketing system of Viewpoint has always prevented
that).

Any alternative solution brings some drawback in an area or another.

Adobe Atmosphere is based on VET and offers all advantages (including
bi-directional API), plus free player and no license for content. But the
future of Atmosphere is not
certain, in thye hands of Adobe.

Cult3D is rather expansive, and not as ubiquitous as VET. License
price system is obscure (you ave to request a quote).
Player is Mozilla compatible.

WRML has been updated to match an XML syntax, that gives the X3D (open
source standard) but result is far from photorealistic. There are a
few free players.

Shockwave includes advanced 3D features, while not photorealistic yet.
The player is not as widely distributed as Flash player.
There is no content license fee but Director needed to produce the
files is expansive (about $1500).

The future may be in the hand of Sun and the Java 3D API.
While not on pair with current Viewxpoint technology, it has two
advantages:
- it solve the plug-in problem (no need for any plug-in, just a Java
machine).
- the API is poised to grow in quality

Several systems are based on this API, such as Kaon www.kaon.com

Seems promising. No content fee. Complete software is $600 but can be
baught by modules. Player is Mozilla compatible, that's a good point.
