Question about welding, or whatever...

Andrew,

As long as you have a flat edge you want to weld
to another flat edge, there's a simple way to do
this quickly ... most of the time. The only time this
doesn't work is when you have a very complex
mesh where points are close together.

After duplicating with symetry, move the 2nd half
very close to the first one while holding down the
Shift key to constrain the movement so the points
stay aligned. Zoom in so you can see it enlarged.

Once the points are close, select both objects and
use the top menu to bring up the Weld dialogue box.
Select the "Custom Tolerance" option and use a
distance of, say, .01". This will weld any two points
together while leaving the rest of them alone.

You may have to try it, undo it and retry it until you
get the proper custom distance, but it works very
well.

The other method when your two halves don't have
a lot of close vertices it to bring the parts near but
not too close together and use marquee selection
to draw a box around all of the points along the two
edges. Once you have all of them, go to the top menu
and release on "Loft." Most of the time, this does a
great job of connecting the two sides. Then you can
move one of those side much closer to finish it off.
