Confused about Quicktime animations 2004-02-05 - By Eric Christensen
Back Hi Mark, I agree with you. Quicktime, in my opinion, is the best multimedia player out there. It has the most flexibility and complies with more standards than the other two options (Window media player and Real Player). It also has the best quality.
Quicktime supports multiple types of codecs (which is short for "compression and de-compression"). This means that with quicktime you can play back movies encoded in the Cinepak, Sorenson, MPEG-4 (See http://PEG-4.ora-code.com), (and many more) codecs.
And as David Bell said, quicktime pro supports additional codecs and gives you basic editing functions as well as export functions, which allows you to create an uncompressed video for example, then export it using any compression codec you choose. When you choose to export a file that Quicktime understands into a .mov file or Quicktime movie, click on "options" in the dialog box and in the next dialog, at the bottom, you'll see a check-box that says: Prepare for Internet Streaming. In the Fly-out menu select "Fast Start". Fast Start does exactly what you described. As soon as a small part of the movie has downloaded, it will begin to play on the end-user's computer. That way the end user doesn't have to sit and wait for the whole thing to download before they get the "instant gratification" we all love. : )
And as far as I know, wether or not you use "Fast Start" the quality is the same.
I hope this helps. I would highly recommend getting quicktime pro!
Have fun. Eric
