Re: Graphics card? 2004-02-03 - By pmiinalainen
Back Carrara runs very fast either on nvidia geforce4 of geforceFX cards or cards with ATI RADEON 9600, 9700, 9800.
ATI chips used to have troubles with carrara, but latest version of carrara seem to fix them. I have mobility radeon9000 on my laptop and it's really fast. I cracked and installed drivers for professional applications (FireGL drivers). You can crack either nvidia or radeon cards to run with professional opengl drivers. You will loose some speed in games and in synthetic benchmarks, but content creation apps will run faster. Just google for softfiregl or softquadro... i think utility comes with rivatuner...
either will do the trick, nvidia cards may be bit safer bet with carrara and amapi. The opengl seems the be more robust in nvidia.
If i were you, i'd propably get nvidia fx with 256mb. If you don't already have video-editing card or have need for analog video in/out, you might want to take look at cards that provide you with analog video in/out. I think ASUS have some such combo cards.
My dream machine would include 2x opteron 248 processors (they scale better in multi-processor than xeon and are faster in photoshop) tyan tiger m/b fastest nvidia card serial ata raid dvd+/-r/rw drive decent sound card firewire and of course win xp pro
