CG Effects in DV 2004-02-02 - By Andrew Turner
Back Hi Craig -
I don't know about the import capabilities of After Effects; however the other stuff you mention - spaceships, bullet holes, etc... is actually very easy to do in Carrara.
Also, Carrara has useful output options specifically for compositing such as alpha channel and lots of G-buffer options.
I'm still trying to figure out silly tricks with the G-buffers. You can do some really incredible, and really dumb, stuff with them ;)
One more thing: Carrara is really easy to use at a basic level, and priced quite nicely. You may find that it works as a basis for the basic stuff you're trying to do, such as animate a flying saucer (or is it actually a SHIP?) because it's a relatively simple and straightforward program. It also does some advanced stuff quite well (rendering). However, you may find that you need to do things Carrara doesn't do YET, such as advanced particles and so forth. Consider it part of your toolbox, then, as I do. It's a great tool, and pretty well-rounded.
Cheers, Andrew

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to create CG effects in DV footage, and I'm wondering if Carrara is the way to go. My hope is to combine Carrara with Adobe After Effects' compositing capabilites to get the results I want.
Here are a few examples of what I'd like to do:
- Add a ship flying over a mountain, building etc. - Add bullet holes to a wall - Create a 3D cartoon character to interact with live actors - Import 3D models into After Effects (maintaining texture, quality, etc.)
Any thoughts or ideas on this? I realize this is a broad question, but at this point, I'm mainly fishing around for basic techniques, software, tutorials - anything that will point me in the right direction.
Thanks gang! Craig
