Confused about editing vs. loading shaders 2004-02-01 - By domnei1
Back O.k., so I'm new to Carrara (as of a few days ago), so I apologize if this is a dumb question. But I've read the manual and tried a while on my own, if that's any consolation.
Suppose (as I would think will happen all the time) I have a scene with, say, 7 different objects sharing the exact same texture. To begin with suppose I make or get one shader I like and apply it manually (by dragging or with the eyedropper or something) to all 7 objects. It's a "master shader" I guess.
Now if I want to *edit* that shader, I know how to do that. I open it in the shader editor, an annoying dialogue comes up that basically says "do you really want to do this?", I say yes, and then edit away. When I change the shader the shading of all 7 objects changes. Cool.
But...there's this little button next to the shader preview in the Assemble room called "Preset", which looks pretty darn useful, as it allows me to load a completely new texture. But when I do that only 1 of my 7 objects changes, and I then have to copy the new texture (again) to the other 6. That might be o.k. if it's really 7, but what if it's 97?
Obviously people have to do this all the time, so what am I missing? What's the easy way to do this? It's like I want the ability inside the shader editor to do a "load" rather than an "edit", but I don't see a way to do it there either.
Side question: any good resources (free is nice, but not necessary) for obtaining additional pre-made shaders? I intend to get into learning how to make 'em myself, but for now just having more good ones available would be nice.
Thanks in advance.
