Generally, if you manage to get video, say from Carrara, you render in
DV format (same as DVD resolution), roughly 750 * 480. I absolutely
recommend sequenced uncompressed files, that way, if you have to fix a
part of a render, you only need to fix a part, not re-render the whole
thing.
Do your editing in whatever NLE you want to use, I use Ulead MSP7,
others like Vegas. For DVD, the file will be automatically converted
to MPEG2 (I think that's it, you just chose the bitrate, typically
8000KB/sec for best quality). Audio goes in as normal.

Basically, Render to DV resolution first, store uncompressed, let the
NLE convert the resultant file to your destination. DVDs use a very
specific set of codecs/encoding/framerate/size. You don't have much
leeway there. (Bitrate allows about 4 different quality settings).
