In lwave and c4d you can also "paint" your selection (and in c4d you
can even control the size of the "brush"). This makes it easier to
select large sets of polygons. A lot of modelers also have things
like "select connected" and "expand selection" and other tools like
that for help with making selections.

(notice the circular brush outline around the cursor and the radius
setting for the brush in the lower right and also the handy checkbox
for whether only visible elements should be selected)
