I've used illustrate couple of years ago.

The reason my former agency got it, was the flash and illustrator
rendering. You can do toon shading by limiting the color ranges,
lightness etc. with fall-off values. You can maybe get similar
results in carrara by getting the digitalcarversguild fake fresnel
plugin and using it with curves and other mixers. Haven't tested the
method in carrara, but here's how it is done in 3dsmax

http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/77
and
http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/79

and especially here
http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/73

You can see, that thing is to mix colors according to how they face
camera. Carrara has more limited mixing and shader channel system
than 3dsmax, but by applying the principles found in these articles
and using toon!!! and NPR in carrara, you can get pretty close.
I'll try to find some time to test this with carrara. Pretty busy
with some billable stuff right now, so can't help you straight
away...

I know cedric did pretty amazing images with npr. Maybe cedric could
give couple of tips?
