My suggestion to this approach (if it works for your needs) is either use a hi-res background starfield map for 90% of the stars and create the other 10 with lights that you can adjust the intensity. Or, you can purchase the Power Pack plug-in from Eovia (http://www.eovia.com/buynow/product_cat.jsp) and use the Starbright feature for your main starfield and create 10 with lights that you can adjust. (Starbright is also sold separately by the publisher - http://digitalcarversguild.com/).
Either method will cut down your objects by 90% and should save you rendering time.
