I had an interesting idea: just as you can make "G-buffers" that show distance, or surface coordinates, imagine a rendering mode in which each pixel is assigned a value based on how long it took to render that pixel in the regular image. A bumpy, reflective object might appear as a big white splotch, while everything else would be dark. This could be very helpful in fine-tuning textures and lighting, especially in animations. You might discover that a very subtle bump map is slowing your rendering time considerably, so you might as well get rid of it.
Taking it a step further, you could have separate channels for reflections, bumps, glows, and so forth, so that you can analyze the rendering time of each of them. I think 32 levels of grey would be plenty for this, so it wouldn't have to consume a lot of memory.
