 You missed something very elementary. You skipped a step. After you resized
 it and selected all you went directly to the subdivision smoothing. This won
't
 work because all the edges are still creased. Before hitting the sub div
 smoothing button select the whole cube, go to the SELECTION menu and pull
 down to SMOOTH EDGES. After that sub div will work.

 Since you are using the book, you can find the same info in the excercise you
 are doing in paragraph three. It starts with, "Next with the cube selected..."
