A novel idea: rendering-time G-buffers

A novel idea: rendering-time G-buffers

I had an interesting idea: just as you can make "G-buffers" that show
distance, or surface coordinates, imagine a rendering mode in which
each pixel is assigned a value based on how long it took to render
that pixel in the regular image. A bumpy, reflective object might
appear as a big white splotch, while everything else would be dark.
This could be very helpful in fine-tuning textures and lighting,
especially in animations. You might discover that a very subtle bump
map is slowing your rendering time considerably, so you might as well
get rid of it.

Taking it a step further, you could have separate channels for
reflections, bumps, glows, and so forth, so that you can analyze the
rendering time of each of them. I think 32 levels of grey would be
plenty for this, so it wouldn't have to consume a lot of memory.

And that's my idea
