Eric is exactly right.

I make gemstone shaders with the Fresnel effects plugin from
Zmorphics, in fact the last render I posted on the list was using
that plugin on three diamond models.

The Zmorphics Fresnel plugin performs accurate calculations in both
the reflection and refraction properties of an object, accurately
changing the surface from transparent to reflective.

Gemstones refractive index is not having anything to do with fresnel.
Most gemstones are double refractive to some degree, but some are not
(diamonds are not). It is helpful to gain a bit more accuracy for
double refractive materials by putting the differential into the
refraction channel using the Zmorphics fresnel tool. Its not perfect
(as in true double refraction, the light ray is split) but its
working rather well to simulate the effect somewhat in a
stone/crystal.

an older render, but it shows how the plugin changes with different
gemstone properties, and can really pop the pattern of a stone
(especially the "rose" Princess cut ruby in the foreground)... I
should probably rerender this at some point in Carrara 3.

I got some really good response about that render on a facetors list,
most of those people know what those stones should look like in real
life so it was gratifying to know they approved of the results.

take care, Robin
