Re: Fresnel effects -- plugin tool 2004-01-21 - By steven_mcq
Back Something to bear in mind when considering any "optical" effect in a 3D render: raytracing does not work the way real light does. The rays are traced in reverse from the direction of real world light propagation and there is no simulation of light's wave properties. Optical effects are achieved through the application of rules: bend the traced ray a certain amount for a given index of refraction, for example. Eric and Brian have enriched the available rules with their Fresnel plug-ins. Some rules that exist in nature the Carrara user has to apply case by case, such compensating for the decoupling of object color and object transparency in Carrara. Some rules can only be approximated, such as caustics effects that shouldn't be examined too closely. The impression is the thing, even for photorealistic rendering, when the impression sought is the illusion of a photograph.
