Kevin,
You can make or find on the web texture mapping grids with numbered sections. When these are loaded into the shader of an object with UV or projection mapping, you get a direct portrayal of the distortion. Then you know what sectors of the texture map show up where on the model, and can paint accordingly.
But it is better to section the UV map in the Carrara 3 UV editor so that each part of the model is laid out without overlap. UVmapper Pro has some good tutorials.
