Fresnel effects -- plugin tool

Sharing some recent information, and as usual, Eric is helpful and
very responsive to his customers.....

Doug,
Feel free to repost my reply.

I named it Fake Fresnel because it simply goes from white to
black as the surface normal turns away from the camera, with some
adjustment on how quickly it rolls off. This is not a true Fresnel
effect, but gives similar results for many situations. Because it's
not a real Fresnel effect, you can also use it in shader channels
other than refraction, reflection, and transparency. Additionally it
requires less steps to set up.

As I understand the ZMorphics tool, it does real Fresnel
calculations so will give a correct answer so to speak. It may have
other capabilities that I am not aware of. I've got ZTools, but all
I've used is the Soft Reflections, which are really nice BTW.

So to sum up, Fake Fresnel is a little more versatile (with
regards to shader channels) and easier to set up. ZMorphics Fresnel
tools will give you an accurate, correct render.

Best regards,
Eric Winemiller

Subject: fresnel

Questions:

Why did you name your plug-in "fake" fresnel?  Does it give us the
real effect or only something similar?  What's missing?

Is your plug-in different/better/not as good as the fresnel effect
from zmorphics/lost horizon?

If you wish you can reply to me or post your answer to the Yahoo
Carrara list......or allow me to post your reply?

Thanks,

I think you are doing a great job on your plug-in's and I'm just
looking to find out what is best for me and the kind of creating I do.

Doug
