Back Actually, the way I did it was to create the gradient in a Color Gradient channel under color, and chose "Gradient" under shader with 0 turbulence.
Still, I'd like to finely control the rotation of the gradient, but can't.

That won't work. Doing that will still leave the sphere a solid color. When you place the gradient into the blender it will still ask for another shader to activate the gradient.
