The metaball modeler works something like that. It is very different from the
other modelers, though.

I played with the vertex modeler a little the other day and I really like the
dynamic
extrusion. Very sweet.
What I'd really like is a live freeform modeler like the FREEWARE ClayScape 3D
(www.jarfish.com). You literally model a mesh object as if it were clay. One of
the best
features is the ability to roughen the mesh (add bumpiness) interactively with
paintbrush-like tools. Seems like Carrara should have features like that built
in after
all this time. Maybe it does and I haven't found it??
Anything grooves is a good solution, but it's still not live/interactive.
