Hi Naomi,
If you don't suffer from Amapi-phobia you can do it there in there
with just a few mouse clicks.
Amapi 7:
1. Build or load pole.
2. Draw a helix around pole ( you can interactively fit the height,
diameter and number of turns to the pole as you drag the mouse)
3. Draw the ribbon profile any place on the screen, location and/or
orientation to the helix, do not matter (simple 2 point polyline will
do).
4. Sweep the ribbon profile down the helix. (Amapi lets you cycle
through different orientations between the path and profile using the
spacebar)
5. Using the dynamic geometry feature you can adjust the fit of the
ribbon around the pole by moving the control points of the origional
helix and the ribbon will update as you work.

The same thing can be done with earlier versions of Amapi, including
5.15 that comes with Carrara, with the exception of using the dynamic
geometry option to tweak it.
