In the past I've used this method for turning edges into apparent beams.
Try taking it two steps further by 1) putting your director's camera inside the octagon and extruding (intruding?) the faces till they almost wrap around to make nearly closed beams, then deleting the original faces; 2) performing a tolerance weld to join the backsides of the beams.
