Without seeing it, I'm guessing a bit, but I think
this will work ...

1. Create your pole in the Vertex Modeler.
2. Go back into the Assemble Room and Duplicate
the pole and re-enter the Modeling Room with the
duplicate. Before crreating the ribbon using the
orriginal pole object, reduce the diameter of the
pole just a little bit so that the ribbon will be
partially embedded in the pole.
3. Construct the ribbon from the pole object and
make sure you crease the edges of the ribbon
but leave the sides of it smooth.
