Back In v3 eovia appears to have taken a few things from amapi (like +/- modifiers and point/edge/poly/object selectors) and added them to the vertex modeler. This approach makes sense to me and I imagine there will be some more of that in v4. Presumably having access to the amapi code makes it easier/faster to add these sorts of new modelling features to Carrara.
I was just reading a max v6 review and the reviewer likened using NURBS instead of subdivision surfaces to making your own nails instead of buying them from Home Depot. Apps like c4d and lightwave seem to get along fine without them. As I understand it, NURBS have to be rendered out as polygons in the end anyway. But I haven't ever used them so maybe there's more to it than that.
Lightwave has a separate modeler and users seem to be split about whether that's good or bad. I wonder if some of the reason for separateness had to do with the fact that screen real estate used to be much more at a premium but that's not so much the case now (heck you can get an iMac now with 1600x1050 native resolution). Personally I like Carrara's rooms metaphor which sort of gives you the best of both worlds.
Carrara isn't as deep as c4d or lightwave (yet) but I think in many ways it has a better overall workflow.
