Carrara's history stems mostly from Ray Dream Design, Amapi is mostly
(iirc) a European program with French roots.  Very different programs,
different internal code, different way of thinking about things...

Well, one reason is that some of the tools may not be applicable from
one program to another.  Equally, it might be asked why not take
Carrara's renderer and animation tools and shaders and transport them
to Amapi....

Amapi is a better modeler if you understand it.  Carrara is better at
animation, shaders and rendering.

See above.

There's that word "should".  In short, take a look at the difference
between C1 and C3 if you can.  There's a ton of stuff that "should" be
included in C3 or C4 or C5, but it's a combination of adding new
features to an existing program (not always simple to do), marketing,
limited (all companies are limited) resources, and demand for
features.

I'll look for C4 to have something (perhaps) for poser import, I'd
really love to see BVH/MB import, and improvements in animation,
terrain editing, and whatever else I think is needed .... <grin>

That is a design goal, eventually.  What might happen is that Amapi
becomes a plugin for Carrara.  However, the two programs have to start
thinking about the model in the same terms, otherwise, there's no
common ground at all.  The Amapi importer is a start at this.
